We just had an eclipse! What does it mean?! No doubt you’ve heard a lot about the recent eclipse cycle over the last few weeks. Some people expected epic, life altering changes on a personal, national, or global level, right on April 8th. That’s not how eclipses work, though.
Yes, they do usher in a change in human energy, and a change in the Earth at the location of the path. The lives of those souls who live nearby are also heavily influenced. But how? And why?
On a subtle level, the eclipse’s blocking of the sun’s light, our thoughts, and the moon’s light, our feelings, brings about a shift in consciousness. Without thoughts or feelings, what’s left? The Self is what remains. Your big Self, your higher Self, your cosmic Self.
This is why it is important to meditate, contemplate, chant, fast, perform ceremonies - anything that makes you feel closer to your cosmic, higher self. Doing so during an eclipse can usher in amplified spiritual progress, condensing the value of one meditation into the value of hundreds. It’s similar for the Earth. The eclipse casts a shadow, and the Earth, also a living being, mysteriously responds to this energy.
What if you didn’t do anything but watch the eclipse? That’s ok! The potential is still there. This eclipse happened at the end of Pisces, in the last Nakshatra of the zodiac, Revatī. Not only that, but all the planets are marching through this exact point over the next few weeks. Except for Saturn, he’s headed that way, but he’s much slower to move.
So we have Sun, Venus, Mars, and Moon, all passing through the end of the zodiac, and over the eclipse point at 25 degrees of Pisces. Mercury was gandanta during the eclipse, having already passed through Pisces, sitting at 0 degrees of Aries. Gandanta is a junction between a water sign and a fire sign, and is a very sensitive point in the zodiac, making for a sensitive point for our minds. Moon and Jupiter are also in Aries now, and Sun and Venus are quickly making their way over to the party. The eclipse point can be a trigger point for events and energies as planets transit that point in the weeks to come.
What does this mean? It means endings and beginnings. Some of this might be out of your control, and some of it you can intentionally choose to use the massive energy for change. A lot will depend on your chart and your specific relationship with each of the planets, as well as where the sign of Pisces lives in your birth chart.
What can you let go of that no longer serves you? Letting go opens up space for new, fresh opportunities and material gains. New insights can arise, as well as new desires for learning, gaining skills, and latent talents and gifts can come online now. Is there any desire for learning or want of a new skill that has been simmering beneath the surface, silenced by the mundane tasks of your daily life? Now is the time to take a look into those things.
In Vedic thought, life is a Līlā - a play, a diversion, a disguise, a sport. You can rewrite your story. If you don’t like the screenplay of your life, change it! Perhaps not a huge life overhaul, but look into which scenes can you edit out, what characters you can cut from the cast, and how can you cast new, exciting, and supportive characters to accompany you on your journey. These are some things to think about.
Revatī is about wealth and transcendence, preserving the universe, nurturing animals and agriculture. On a larger scale, this eclipse could kick off an increased attention by the masses on caring for our planet and those who live on it, including the animals. How are we to transcend, to preserve the universe, if we are still consuming live, sentient beings on our own planet? What might happen if we stopped eating animals, producing them like a product in a factory? What if the animals were eventually able to evolve into higher beings, with new digestive features that made it possible for them to become plant eaters as well? We chalk it up to “the circle of life,” but isn’t it awful that animals have to live vigilantly to avoid being chased down and ripped apart alive, so another animal can live? There has to be a way to evolve past this model, even if it takes a few million years! But it has to start with us. This is not to judge anyone who eats meat, only to get us thinking in a different way.
Children born during this procession of planets through Pisces will likely be highly sensitive to the needs of the planet and the animals, ushering in a generation of change-making around our dietary habits and needs, in response to the accumulated energy of pain and suffering brought about by humans eating a carnivorous diet. It will be interesting to see what mission these new souls come in with and how it will play out.
